DIY Halloween Costumes for Kids and Adults

THIS POST CONTAINS AFFILIATE LINKS, SEE MY DISCLOSURE HERE.

There are two kinds of people in this world: those who go all out for Halloween and those who think it’s fun but aren’t that into it. Whichever camp you’re in, there’s no denying that Halloween is a very fun holiday. That’s why it’s so easy to get caught up in spending money on decorations, food, candy, and, most importantly, costumes.

Shoppers say they will spend an average of $86.27 on Halloween this year, according to the National Retail Federation. To put that into perspective, think about what other things in your budget cost that much. Maybe a week’s worth of groceries or a new car battery, perhaps? Now, if you can afford to spend a chunk of change on holidays and you choose to put Halloween in your budget, that’s great! The key is to budget for it and then stick to it.

The price for a Halloween costume seems to climb every year. Have you looked at what it costs to buy a new Halloween costume this year? This year’s kids’ costumes, like this light up T-Rex costume for example, cost up to $99 on Pottery Barn Kids. One of the easiest ways to save money on Halloween is to make your own costume. With so many DIY costume ideas online, you don’t have to look far for inspiration.

Adult DIY Costume Ideas

Characters from the Wizard of Oz – For the scarecrow, just add some hay around your wrists and ankles with a green T-shirt and jeans.

Mickey or Minnie Mouse – Black pants, tan shoes, and your Disney ears. Easy!

Football Player – Support your favorite sports team and wear an easy Halloween costume.

Barbie or Ken from Toy Story – All you need for Barbie is some leg warmers and your tightest-fighting athletic attire. For Ken, throw on a Hawaiian shirt and shorts…and maybe a tan.

Kids DIY Costume Ideas

A Box of Crayons – Cute for a group of kids who want to dress up together. Everyone picks a color! Make your own crayon label to adhere to their shirts.

Winnie the Pooh – A cropped red T-shirt with yellow bottoms is really all you need. Plus, kids will think it’s fun to make their own honey pot.

Characters from Toy Story 4 – Woody and Buzz Lightyear are the obvious choices, but Forky would be an easy costume to create.

Where to Shop for DIY Halloween Costumes

Your local thrift store is a great place to shop when you’re creating your own Halloween costume. If you’ll be cutting, gluing, or making edits to an article of clothing, you probably won’t want to use the clothes in your closet. A thrift store is where you’ll find inexpensive clothing items that you can make into your costume without ruining something nice.

For accessories and craft supplies, stores like Michaels and Hobby Lobby are a great resource. The hope with making your own costume is that you already have these supplies at home, but if you don’t, just be sure to stick to a budget when you head to the craft supplies store.

My Own DIY Costumes From Halloweens Past

Here’s a DIY Spiderman and Mary Jane that my boyfriend and I dressed up as one Halloween. I’m a huge advocate of DIY costumes, as you can tell. I really liked this one too because it’s subtle for the guy, and was easy to pull together for me. I pretty much had everything in my closet except for the red wig, which I purchased on Amazon. I found a random red t-shirt of which I drew on with a sharpie the spiderman logo. Everything else we had in our closets!

Here are a few more DIY costume photos of me for you to enjoy.
