Budget-Friendly Fall & Winter Fashion Ideas

THIS POST CONTAINS AFFILIATE LINKS, SEE MY DISCLOSURE HERE.

If you’re someone who thinks of fashion and style as a creative outlet and form of expression, then keeping your wardrobe fresh and modern is probably important to you. The fall and winter seasons are every fashion lover’s dream with new trends hitting the runways, cozy fabrics with festive patterns, and opportunities to layer scarves, coats and sweaters. Each season, there’s something special about buying something new that makes us feel confident and happy as we enter the holiday season. In other words, sticking to your clothing budget may get a little tricky this time of year.

These budget-friendly ideas are tried-and-true ways you can refresh your wardrobe without overspending.

Scarves & Accessories

How about a soft plaid scarf to freshen up your fall wardrobe? The great thing about a fun scarf is you can wear it daily so you get a lot of use out of it. Sticking to smaller accessories, like scarves, hair accessories, and jewelry is a way to wear something new and trendy without completely overhauling your closet. One small new piece can go a long way in making your wardrobe feel fresh and new.

Recreate Looks

Have you ever seen someone wearing an outfit and tried to recreate it using your own clothing? Get inspired by checking out what your friends—in-person or on the Internet—are wearing. Then, head to your closet to look for similar pieces that you can use to recreate their look. Or, have a friend or family member come over to help you put new outfits together. Sometimes all you need is a different perspective! This idea requires no spending, but you (hopefully) get many new outfits that you’re excited to wear for the season.

Rent Higher Price Items

If you have a formal event, like a black-tie wedding or a charity gala, to attend, renting clothing can help you save money on something that’s more expensive and you may only wear once. A statement coat, a formal gown, a tuxedo—these are all items that you can rent instead of purchasing! Companies like nuuly and Rent the Runway offer subscriptions and rentable items that you can wear and return once you’re done. Just remember to cancel once the season is over!

Thrifting & Swapping

If you’re up for a hunt, shopping at a thrift store is a fun way to save money and find some gently-used clothing. You may even find some designer pieces and in-season styles. Another option is to host a clothing swap. A clothing swap is where a few friends come together and bring clothing items that they no longer want. Then you can swap clothes with friends and go home with new-to-you clothing you can wear all season. Just make sure you set the parameters before you start swapping so no one goes home empty-handed.

Wait for a Sale

If you find something you love, but it doesn’t fit in your budget for the month, wait and see if it goes on sale. Many retailers are offering promo codes and discounts this time of year, so chances are if you wait it out, you can get it for a much cheaper price. Signing up for an email newsletter from a retailer that you like will ensure you’re the first to know about any sales. Downloading apps and signing up for loyalty programs is also a great way to get exclusive offers and coupons.

Don’t forget that clothing should be a line item in your budget. Set your budget at the beginning of the month and then don’t go over! Pro tip: If you like to shop in the fall and winter, but not in the spring and summer, allow your clothing budget to roll over during those no shopping months so you have more to spend in the fall.
